CURRENT (AND PREVIOUS) FUNCTION: 2010 -2018: PhD and postdoc Ghent University, Department REVAKI, injury prevention research unit; 2018 - 2019: ZAP Vrije Universiteit Brussel, research group Human Physiology and Sports Physiotherapy, Faculty LK of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
RESEARCH AREA: Prevention of disease and injuries in athletes from a multifactorial approach: the interaction between nutrition, mental wellbeing and physical load.
CURRENT RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Competition and elite sport and the associated lifestyle entail an increased risk of sports injuries and/or infections. Because the isolated examination of biomechanical risk factors does not provide a conclusive answer to the question which athletes are more susceptible to injury, the need for the complex system approach within preventive sports medicine is becoming more and more urgent. Current research focuses on the influence and interaction of nutrition, mental wellbeing and physical load on the health of a sporting population.
PRACTICAL APPLICABILITY: Optimizing the coaching of top athletes, injury prevention and best performance go hand in hand. On the basis of this knowledge, the aim is to extrapolate to the broader sports population.
