Romain Meeusen

Prof. Dr. Romain Meeusen is former Vice-Rector Internationalisation and former head of the Human Physiology Research Group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His research interest is focused on “Exercise and the Brain in Health & Disease” exploring the influence of neurotransmitters on human performance, training, rehabilitation. Recent work is on thermoregulation, neurogenesis, cognition, nutrition in health & disease and robotics. He teaches on exercise physiology, training & coaching and sports physiotherapy. Prof. Meeusen published ca 550 articles, abstracts, and book chapters in peer-reviewed national and international journals, 21 books on sport physiotherapy, and gave lectures at more than 950 national and international conferences. He is past President of the Belgian Society of Kinesiology, and the Belgian Federation of Sports Physiotherapy. He is former Board member of the European College of Sport Science ECSS (2000-2013), and of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) (2010-2013). In 2006 he gave the ‘presidents lecture’ at the annual meeting of ACSM. In 2009 he received the Belgian ‘Francqui Chair’ at the Université Libre de Bruxelles on ‘Exercise and the Brain’. In 2017 he received an honorary Fellowship of the society for the promotion of Science in Japan. He is also holder of two named lecturing chairs at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He was the director of the Human Performance lab of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where he worked with top athletes. He was also the scientific advisor of the ‘Lotto Cycling Institute’ (Lotto-Soudal professional cycling team). 

Prof. dr. Romain Meeusen is voormalig vicerector Internationalisering en voormalig hoofd van de onderzoeksgroep Menselijke Fysiologie aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op "Beweging en de hersenen in gezondheid en ziekte", waarbij hij de invloed van neurotransmitters op menselijke prestaties, training en revalidatie onderzoekt. Recent werk omvat thermoregulatie, neurogenese, cognitie, voeding in gezondheid en ziekte en robotica. Hij doceert inspanningsfysiologie, training & coaching en sportfysiotherapie. Prof. Meeusen heeft circa 550 artikelen, abstracts en boekhoofdstukken gepubliceerd in peer-reviewed nationale en internationale tijdschriften, 21 boeken over sportfysiotherapie en heeft lezingen gegeven op meer dan 950 nationale en internationale congressen. Hij is voormalig voorzitter van de Belgische Vereniging voor Kinesiologie en de Belgische Federatie voor Sportfysiotherapie. Hij was bestuurslid van het European College of Sport Science (ECSS) (2000-2013) en van het American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) (2010-2013). In 2006 gaf hij de ‘presidentiële lezing’ tijdens de jaarlijkse bijeenkomst van de ACSM. In 2009 ontving hij de Belgische ‘Francqui-leerstoel’ aan de Université Libre de Bruxelles over ‘Beweging en de hersenen’. In 2017 werd hij benoemd tot erelid van de Society for the Promotion of Science in Japan. Hij bekleedt tevens twee benoemde leerstoelen aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Hij was directeur van het Human Performance Lab van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, waar hij met topatleten werkte. Daarnaast was hij wetenschappelijk adviseur van het ‘Lotto Cycling Institute’ (het professionele wielerteam Lotto-Soudal).
